On a hot July night in 1984, in Burlington, North Carolina, Jenni fer Thompson, a twenty-two-year- old college student, was asleep in her apartment when she heard a noise. She opened her eyes to see a black man with a knife. “ When I asked what he wanted, he proceeded to take off my underwear,” Thom p son says, in a harrowing account o f that night. “At that point, I realized that I was going to be raped. I didn’t know if he would kill me.” If she lived, she prom ised herselfshe wou Id make sure he paid the price. Days later in a police lineup, she picked out Ronald Cotton as the Rapist. Then in 1995 new DNA evidence showed Cotton had not raped Jennifer Thompson and set him free.
